Sheinbaum Meets with Airlines to Discuss US Countermeasures

President Claudia Sheinbaum chaired a meeting this Friday at the National Palace with the executives of Aeroméxico, Volaris, and VivaAerobus, following measures imposed by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) that revoked 13 current or planned routes of Mexican airlines and threaten to restrict combination cargo flights from AICM to that country.

The meeting was attended by Enrique Beltranena, president and CEO of Volaris, as well as officials from the aviation and national security sectors: Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente, the Secretaries of Defense and the Navy, Ricardo Tevilla Trejo and Raymundo Pedro Morales, respectively; in addition to the head of SICT, Jesús Esteva, the Undersecretary of Transportation, Tania Carro Toledo, and the directors of the AICM and AIFA airports.

Mexican airlines will face a difficult year according to Moody's.

Sheinbaum defended the decision to move cargo operations to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport, arguing that the measure was a response to security criteria due to the saturation of AICM.

"Repealing the 2024 decree would again lead to security problems at AICM. We trust that with the United States Government we will achieve recognition of this situation and an agreement," said the head of state at her morning press conference.

Sources in the sector indicate that the Mexican Government is maintaining a dialogue table with the State Department and the DOT to avoid an escalation in the conflict and guarantee the continuity of air operations between the two countries.

She recalled that since 2014, during the government of Enrique Peña Nieto, there were already technical evaluations that warned of the operational risks of the capital's airport, which is why the need for a new terminal was raised.
